Atma Fasting Guidelines

Fasting Period :
1 Meal Mung Dhal Fasting – 25 Days
Plain Water Fasting – 5 Days

1 Meal Mung Dhal Fasting :

  • Prepare mung dhal gravy & eat with plain rice for lunch.
  • Drink a cup of black tea or black coffee for breakfast and dinner. Those who are under any strong medication may replace coffee/tea with a cup of fresh cow milk.
  • You may drink plain water as much as you want.

How to prepare Mung Dhal Gravy :

  • Cook broken mung dhal with a pinch of turmeric powder and a cup of water until soft.
  • Mash it well and keep it ready ( you may cook using pressure cooker )
  • Heat oil in pan and add mustard seeds , cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds & fennel seeds with curry leaves.
  • Add the cooked mung dhal along with water. The consistency of gravy should be thin, so add water accordingly. Salt to your taste.
  • Strictly avoid tamarind, fruits and vegetable inclusive onion & garlic.
  • Ready to be served with white rice.

Broken mung dhal is also known as “Split Yellow Green Gram Dhal” in English.

Plain Water Fasting

  • Consume unlimited plain water for 5 days.
  • During Atma Fasting, one should abstain from smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol and engaging in any sexual activity.
